TECHNICAL DOCUMENT
Virtual Headphones compares the measured frequency-response deviation of your headphones with the selected target. It applies a controlled version of that difference to a local audio file with browser audio filters. The result approximates tonal balance. It does not create a complete physical copy of another product.
The catalog is derived from public recommended-result profiles in the open-source AutoEq project. The current release is pinned to AutoEq commit 7ae0f56d5307 so the published catalog does not change unexpectedly. AutoEq gathers measurements from multiple independent collections. The exact original source for each selected profile appears in the DATA & RELIABILITY tab.

The raw source contained several measurements, modes, and names for some products. SolAudioLab grouped profiles that represent the same product, selected one default state, kept meaningful official modes as options, and removed duplicate names. The target catalog contains 2,898 model groups. The stricter MY HEADPHONES list contains 445 verified over-ear models because the product worn by the listener must provide a stable reference point.
The engine calculates the target profile minus the profile of your headphones. It removes the average offset from 125 Hz to 5 kHz so a simple overall level change does not dominate the comparison. Fourteen browser filters then apply a smoothed and limited version of the difference. Changes in the extreme bass and above 10 kHz are reduced because measurements are less stable there.
HIGH means that the product type, measurement source, and rig provide the closest tonal comparison available in this catalog. MEDIUM means that the broad tonal comparison remains useful while the source, rig, or profile grade adds uncertainty. LISTENING REFERENCE is used when an over-ear reference is compared with an earphone or earbud. It helps you hear the general tonal character, while the exact sound can vary with the listener’s ears and how the device fits.
The tool does not normalize the song to a fixed loudness target. It reduces the average tonal offset before filtering and applies the same safety attenuation to both listening modes. Safety attenuation equals the largest positive filter gain plus 1 dB, with at least 0.5 dB of attenuation. Positive corrections are limited to +5 dB, or +4 dB for cross-type comparisons.
This headroom reduces the risk of overload created by the comparison filters. It does not repair clipping that is already present in the uploaded file, and it does not claim to replace a dedicated loudness or true-peak analysis.
The selected audio file is played from a temporary browser address. The file is not uploaded, stored, or sent to SolAudioLab. Closing the page removes it from the tool.
Frequency response cannot reproduce comfort, soundstage, isolation, noise cancelling, distortion, transient behavior, unit variation, pad wear, individual hearing, or the physical interaction between a product and the listener. Use the result to explore tonal character before a real listening test.
